Effects of Trifluoroacetic Acid Modification on the Surface Microstructures and Photocatalytic Activity of Mesoporous TiO2 Thin Films

Abstract: Enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of sol-gel-derived TiO2 thin films by a simple treatment with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) was investigated. The thin films were characterized with N2 adsorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and differential thermal analysis/ thermogravimetry analysis. The photocatalytic activity of the thin films was evaluated by the photoc… Show more

“…The photocatalytic activity of F-TiO 2 powders for decomposition of acetone is obviously higher than that of pure TiO 2 and P25 by a factor of more than 3 times due to the fact that the strong electron-withdrawing ability of the surface Ti-F groups reduces the recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and holes, and enhances the formation of free _OH radicals. Yu et al, 148 prepared TiO 2 thin films using TTIP in the presence of a P123. The surface modification of the films was conducted by dipping the as prepared TiO 2 films in an aqueous trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) solution at room temperature.…”

“…The O 1s core level spectra had two peaks as shown in Figure 7. The peaks at approximately 530.0 and 531.3 eV are 2 , and the source of the hydroxyl groups would be water in the air [31,32]. Although our experiment was carried out in CO 2 gas with 50% relative humidity, the same formation of surface hydroxyl groups would occur between TiO 2 and water on the TiO 2 surface.…”
