Effects of treatment with Maraviroc a CCR5 inhibitor on a human hepatic stellate cell line

Abstract: After an acute liver damage, tissue regeneration repairs lesions with degradation of deposed fibrotic material, while mechanisms of tissue restoration are persistently activated following several repeated injuries, inducing deposition of extracellular matrix. (ECM). Factors responsible for ECM remodeling have been identified in a pathway involving a family of zinc-dependent enzyme matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), together with tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). Recent experimental models suggeste… Show more

“…25 TIMPs are the major physiological inhibitors of MMPs. 26 The expression of MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 increased in the early stage of fibrosis model induced by silicosis in rats, but the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 decreased significantly in the later stage, whereas TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 continued to rise. 27 The imbalance of MMPs/TIMPs affected the development of pulmonary fibrosis.…”

“…Carbon tetrachloride-induced fibrosis in mice was similarly attenuated by CCL5 inhibition [14]. In the human stellate cell line LX-2, the CCR5 inhibitor maraviroc blocked cell cycle progression and inhibited collagen accumulation [15].…”

“…A common neurodegenerative process is also observed in HIV‐positive patients taking antiretroviral therapy, even if the causes are still unknown. Certainly, there is an HIV–Alzheimer association and the increased longevity of patients due to current therapies increases their incidence (Coppola et al, ; Esposito et al, a, b, ; Zhou et al, ).…”
