Effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation on Postoperative Cognitive Decline in Elderly Patients: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Background: Postoperative cognitive decline (POCD) in the old ages seriously delays the rapid recovery. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) against POCD in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic radical colon cancer surgery, as well as the potential mechanism. Methods: A prospective, single-center, parallel-group, randomized trial was designed. A total of 100 patients (age ≥65 years) undergoing laparoscopic radical resection of colon cancer were … Show more

“…For the included RCTs, the mean sample size was 98.0 (range, 22–220), with the ages of the participants ranging from 31 to 80 years. Three studies (9.67%) were conducted in the United Kingdom ( 26 ), Germany ( 9 ) and Korea ( 11 ), and the remaining 28 (90.33%) were conducted in China ( 10 , 12 , 22 – 25 , 27 – 48 ) . The basic features of the included RCTs are presented in Supplementary Table S2 .…”

“…Whether different electrical stimulation durations have different effects on improving POCD is still uncertain. Some studies showed that continuous stimulation from 30 min before surgery to the end of surgery can improve postoperative POCD in elderly patients and play a protective role in neurological function ( Liu et al, 2021 ; Xi et al, 2021 ; Wei et al, 2022 ). Generally, TEAS intervention is used in the perioperative period, starting more than 30 min before the operation, to reduce the patient’s pain response when the surgeon cuts the skin.…”

“…The combination of these 2 acupoints, together with Zhongwan, can reinforce qi, nourish blood, and invigorate the spleen and stomach; Taixi is the source acupoint of the kidney meridian which can nourish the kidney and yin and supply vital essence and marrow. The combination of the acupoints above can activate Qi and blood circulation and regulate viscera functions to balance the qi and blood, dredge meridians and qi activity, strengthen the body resistance to eliminate pathogenic factors, and improve immunity and fatigue resistance 41–43…”
