Field experiment was carried out on a calcareous loamy sand soil at Ras Sudr Station, South Sinai Governorate, during two season successive in winter season of 2017/2018 cultivated by fennel plant (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) and in summer season 2018 cultivated by pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.). The current work aims to asses effect of compost application as organic amendment at rates of 0, 5, 10, and 15 ton.fed-1 , recommended chemical fertilizer of each plant and their combination on soil physical and chemical properties and its productivity. A complete randomize plot design used with three replications of treatments under studied. The results showed that, application of compost and combination treatments (compost + recommended chemical fertilizer) were significantly decreased effected soil bulk density, hydraulic conductivity, EC, pH and SAR values after each of the first and the second seasons comparing to control. On contrary in case of the recommended chemical fertilizer did not affect of these parameters. Meanwhile soil available water, available N, P and K after each of the first and the second seasons and productivity of fennel plant and pearl millet respectively, were significantly increased. In addition, the results showed that, the affect of difference significantly of treatments under studied after the first season higher than after the second season on soil properties.

The goal of this study was to explore the effects of various soil conditioners on selected properties (pH; organic matter, OM; electrical conductivity, EC; cation exchange capacity, CEC) of a Xerofluvent soil and corn yield. During the experiment, four amendments were applied in an experimental set of plots: tobacco waste compost (TWC), poultry manure (PM), bio-humus (BH), and chemical fertilizer (NPK). Soils were treated with TWC at the rate 50 t ha-1 , PM at the rate 4 t ha-1 , BH at the rate 10 t ha-1 and NPK at the rate 300 kg ha-1 , respectively. All organic conditioners were increased soil pH, OM, CEC, EC and corn yield when compared with the control soil and these parameters have been changed from 5.7% to 333%. The most effective soil conditioners were determined as tobacco waste compost, biohumus, and poultry manure. The findings of current study suggest that 50 t ha-1 TWC should be added to soil as a priority for improving properties of a Typic Xerofluvent soil and crop yield.

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) waste is produced in many countries and is phytotoxic due to the alkaloid content; in Vietnam the waste is usually burned causing air pollution. We composted tobacco waste with chicken manure in different proportions—1 t of waste ± accelerant (C1 and C2); 0.8 t of waste + 0.2 t of chicken manure ± accelerant (C3 and C4); and 0.7 t of waste + 0.3 t of chicken manure ± accelerant (C5 and C6)—for 30 d in covered heaps. Three mixtures containing the accelerant (C2, C4, and C6) reached temperatures of ∼55 °C, that 5s, hot enough to suppress disease and weeds. Composting decreased the alkaloid content from ∼6,000 to ∼200 mg kg−1, and C4 with a C/N ratio of 19:1, was used in a field trial. The compost treatments (0, 10, 15, and 20 t ha−1) were combined fertilizer with phosphorus (40 kg ha−1), nitrogen (60 kg ha−1) and potassium (90 kg ha−1) for leaf mustard (Brassica integrifolia). The yield increased from ∼17 to ∼29 t ha−1 with the amount of compost applied, and the nitrate concentration decreased concomitantly from ∼67 to ∼42 mg NO3–N kg−1 fresh weight, presumably due to ongoing composting (nitrogen drawdown). Organoleptic evaluation showed a preference for the crops grown with the compost amendments. Whether remains to be seen whether one‐off compost applications >20 t ha−1 and repeated, large applications provide additional, long‐term production benefits, or if the benefits may be outweighed by the accumulation of persistent, phytotoxic alkaloids.
