Effects of thoracic squeezing on airway secretion removal in mechanically ventilated patients

Abstract: Background:Accumulation of secretions in the airways of patients with an endotracheal tube and mechanical ventilation will have serious consequences. One of the most common methods of airway clearance is endotracheal suctioning. In order to facilitate discharge of airway secretion resulting in promotion of gas exchange, chest physiotherapy techniques can be used at the time of expiration before suction.Materials and Methods:In this clinical trial with a cross-over design, 50 mechanically ventilated patients ad… Show more

“…Lung squeezing techniques were performed multiple times every day to help in removing sputum. The squeezing technique, sometimes called manually assisted coughing, includes manual compression of the thorax during expiration and release during the end of expiration, encourages the movement of pulmonary secretions, facilitates active inhalation, and improves alveolar ventilation 6 . For patients requiring mechanical ventilation, daily spontaneous breathing trials were performed while the patient was awake, followed by muscle-strengthening exercises of the respiratory accessory muscles facilitated by a physiotherapist.…”

“…A necessidade de avaliação minuciosa e a detecção precisa de sinais clínicos que indicam a aspiração, além de capacidade técnica para condutas emergenciais em casos necessários, são um ponto de relevância destacado pela literatura (SOLE; BENNETT;ASHWORTH, 2015;YOUSEFNIA-DARZI et al, 2016).…”
