Effects of thermocouple electrical insulation on the measurement of surface temperature

Abstract: there is no specific value for the critical radius and the rate of heat flux around the thermocouple wire continuously increases with the wire diameter even when this is larger than the critical radius. Numerical simulation using COMSOL Multiphysics software also confirms that there is negligible thermal effect from the electrical insulation. Moreover, the experimental results agree well with those obtained by both the analytical and numerical methods and further confirm that the diameter of the thermocouple h… Show more

“…The thermocouple wires were pushed through the thermal insulation material to prevent any contact between the wires and the other surfaces (e.g. ceramics base), which could result in the possibility of conduction error through the wires [28]. The inlet water temperature was measured by immersing a thermocouple type K of size 200µm in the water container.…”

“…Thermocouples can have an impact on the temperature of an object being measured due to heat conduction through the wires when the wires are exposed to a surrounding environment with temperature different to the measured temperature. This heat transfer occurs through the wires which then disturbs the system, causing an error in the temperature measurement [1][2][3][4][5][6]. This thermocouple heating effect can be reduced by decreasing the temperature difference between the thermocouple probe and external environment or reducing the size of thermocouple wires and their thermal conductivity [6,7].…”
