“…Vascular lesions are unspecific responses and are not characteristic of a particular insult. An increase in prevalence and severity of thrombi, haemorrhage and/or aneurysms have been reported after non‐medicinal delousing and in situ net washing, and haemorrhage, thrombi and aneurysms have been observed after exposure to jellyfish (Baxter, Sturt, et al, 2011; Baxter, Rodger, McAllen, & Doyle, 2011; Bloecher et al, 2018; Marcos‐Lopez, Mitchell, & Rodger, 2016; Mitchell, Baxter, & Rodger, 2011; Østevik et al, 2021; Østevik et al, 2022; Powell, Atland, & Dale, 2018).…”

“…Gill samples from the fresh water and sea water were examined with RT‐qPCR for Candidatus Branchiomonas cysticola and salmon gill poxvirus, whereas samples from sea water, in addition, were analysed for Desmozoon lepeophtherii and Neoparamoeba perurans . Nucleic acid extraction and RT‐qPCR‐analysis were performed as reported previously (Østevik et al, 2022).…”

“…A more compelling explanation is that at the first treatment, there had been only two weeks since the fish had been moved from the stock tank into the smaller experimental tanks (⌀ = 7 m vs. 3 m) and underwent internal and external tagging. Moving fish, moving fish into smaller tanks and tagging are all known health risks, especially if the fish are not given sufficient time to recover ( Espmark et al., 2017 ; Vollset et al., 2020 ). It is likely that this, compromised the fish at the first treatment, while the zero mortality after the second treatment supports that they at this time had recovered from the tagging.…”

“…Direct high-tech combatting of lice on salmon by radiating the lice with laser beams was tested, but found less effective (Bui et al , 2020). Mechanical removal by freshwater flushing has been widely implemented in the industry (Østevik et al ., 2022) and may, despite its adverse effects on the host, lead to a reduction of the lice count. More intricate farm constructions have used the knowledge about host-finding behaviour by the infective salmon louse copepodids.…”
