Effects of the Seminal Plasma Zinc Content and Catalase Activity on the Semen Quality of Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) Bulls

Abstract: In order to determine zinc and catalase content of seminal plasma in the buffalo and to study their associations with the semen characteristics, 54 semen samples were collected from 10 buffalo bulls; semen volume and sperm concentration, gross and progressive motility and viability were evaluated, seminal plasma was then harvested by centrifugation and its zinc content was estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometer and its catalase activity determined by using a commercial kit. The zinc content of the se… Show more

“…Actually, the challenges faced by the spermatozoa after ejaculation would require an antioxidant with instantaneous and efficient action such as catalase (Alfonso‐Prieto et al ., ). As a matter of fact, a positive influence of catalase on ejaculated semen has been found in several species (Michael et al ., ; Alavi‐Shoushtari et al ., ; Li et al ., ). In contrast to the low concentrations of catalase found in this study, the activity of GPx was observed in all samples.…”

“…Dismutation of superoxide radical is done by superoxide dismutase, which contains Zn. Zn supplementation also increases catalase (CAT) in seminal plasma in buffalo (Alavi-shoushtari et al 2009). Se acts as catalytic centre in the active sites of different antioxidative enzymes (Salvatore et al 1996) and functions as cofactor of glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) system which regulates extra-and intracellular peroxidases (Burk & Hill 1993).…”

“…This is likely to be related to the function of the element in Zn such that Zinc is associated with ATP, plays a role in shrinking and regulating the energy of its phospholipids, and therefore has a direct impact on sperm motility [25] . In a research on buffalo sperm, it has been shown that zinc in the semen plasma has a direct relationship with the survival and progressively motile of sperm [26] . In another study on buffalo sperm, it has been shown that the presence of semen in the plasma directly affects the survival and progressively motile of sperm [26] .…”
