Effects of the penetration of a root canal filling material into the mandibular canal. 2. Changes in the alveolar nerve tissue

Abstract: The root canal filling material "Vitapex" (Neo Dental Chemical Products Co., Tokyo), made of calcium hydroxide and iodoform with the addition of silicone oil, was experimentally injected into the mandibular canals of dogs, and its effect on the alveolar nerve tissue was examined by light and electron microscopy. No change was observed as long as the injected paste did not come into direct contact with the nerve, but tissue damage was found at sites of direct contact. After removal of degenerated nerve debris b… Show more

“…Kawakami et al did histopathological studies regarding tissue reactions to calcium hydroxide-based root canal filling material [5][6][7][8] . We also previously reported and discussed in detail the tissue damage and its fate in vivo [9][10][11][12] . The data presented by Kawakami et al in 2012 were published as a monographs 12) .…”

“…The biological and irritational properties of root canal sealing materials can be evaluated in a number of ways. These have included tissue and cell culture studies (28–30), bone and soft‐tissue reactions to set and unset implanted materials in experimental animals (31–33), experimental and clinical studies on animals and humans (34–36) and new assessments involving histochemical analysis and X‐ray microanalysis (37–39).…”

“…In a detailed study of the effects of an intentionally injected calcium hydroxide sealer that penetrated the mandibular canal in dogs, both the tissue reactions to the material and changes in the alveolar nerve tissue were observed (37, 38). Tissue reactions to the calcium hydroxide paste were examined by radiography, histopathology, and electron microscopy.…”

“…In another paresthesia case, the effects of a formaldehyde paste containing calcium hydroxide and barium sulfate placed into the root canal of the mandibular right second molar tooth were discussed 8) . Vitapex, a root canal filling material containing calcium hydroxide, also elicited degeneration of the inferior alveolar nerve 4) . In the first case, the previous doctor used paste type calcium hydroxide as a root canal medicament.…”
