Effects of the Nanoclay and Intumescent System on the Properties of the Plasticized Polylactic Acid

Abstract: The aim of this study is the investigation of the effects of an intumescent system, consisting of ammonium polyphosphate (APP), as a flame retardant additive, pentaerythritol (PER), as a carbonic agent, and nanoclay, as a synergistic agent, on the flame retardancy of plasticized poly(lactic acid) (PLA). In accordance with this purpose, plasticized and flame retarded PLA with APP compound was prepared and used as a control sample. Nanoclay loading levels were changed between 3 and 10 wt.% in the PLA/APP/PER sam… Show more

“…Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) or polylactide is a promising biodegradable polymer since it can be obtained from renewable sources . PLA is a potential candidate to replace synthetic polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, even poly (ethylene terephthalate).…”

“…The market expects to use biodegradable polymers, especially PLA consumption increases every year, in various usage area such as packaging or electric and electronics . However, the thermal stability of PLA is one of its handicap . It is known that blending of high thermally stable polymer with low thermally stable polymer increases the temperature of degradation of the low thermally stable polymer .…”
