Effects of the Microbubble Generation Mode on Hydrodynamic Parameters in Gas–Liquid Bubble Columns

Abstract: The hydrodynamics parameters of microbubbles in a bubble column were studied in an air–water system with a range of superficial gas velocity from 0.013 to 0.100 m/s using a differential pressure transmitter, double probe optical fiber probe, and electrical resistance tomography (ERT) technique. Two kinds of microbubble generators (foam gun, sintered plate) were used to generate microbubbles in the bubble column with a diameter of 90 mm, and to compare the effects of different foaming methods on the hydrodynami… Show more

“…The microbubbles have been widely applied in fields such as mineral flotation, bubble column, air-injected deoiling hydrocyclone, and wastewater treatment due to their small size, long residence time, large specific surface area, and high mass transfer efficiency. So far, various microbubble generators have been developed, such as spiral liquid flow type, venturi type, ejector type, pressurized dissolution type, porous membrane type, ultrasonic type, and electrolytic type .…”

“…Bubble column reactors have been widely used in petrochemical, chemical, biochemical, and pharmaceutical industries [1][2][3] , with the advantages of a simple construction, no mechanically moving parts, good mass transfer properties, high thermal stability, low energy supply, and low operation costs [4][5][6] . The characteristics of the bubble are the most important parameters in the bubble column; they can be used to estimate the average residence time of bubbles and the contact area of the gas and liquid phases to determine the mass transfer intensity and the reaction rate of the column.…”

“…Ning et al (2020) used a sintered plate and foam gun as microbubble generators to analyze the foam hydrodynamics in a bubble column. They found that the foam gun can provide a narrower average bubble chord length and a higher gas holdup during gas distribution [14]. Ehyaei et al (2020) developed a mathematical model to simulate a geothermal plant as a renewable energy resource by implementing an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) coupled with a genetic algorithm.…”
