Effects of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system on proliferation and apoptosis in the endometrium

Abstract: LNg-IUS resulted in a decrease in endometrial proliferation and an increase in apoptosis in endometrial glands and stroma. The increase in apoptosis associated with increased Fas antigen expression and decreased Bcl-2 protein expression in the endometrium may be one of the underlying molecular mechanisms by which LNg-IUS insertion causes the atrophic change of the endometrium.

“…Whether apoptotic events in the endometrial stroma are necessary for successful implantation or rather hamper this process still remains open. Because contraceptive methods such as the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system and the antiprogestin mifepristone (RU486) have been shown to induce apoptosis in endometrial cells, it is possible to speculate a role of endometrial apoptosis in disturbing implantation (Han and Sidell, 2003;Maruo et al, 2001). By contrast, HLA-G, the characteristic type of human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) in trophoblast cells, promotes IFN-␥ and TNF-␣ production by decidual NK cells (van der Mer et al, 2007).…”
