Effects of the international economic sanctions on access to medicine of the Iranian people: A systematic review

Abstract: Objective: We hypothesized that the international economic sanctions have affected various groups of Iranian people and have compromised their right to access medicines.Methods: Scopus and MEDLINE from their inception to 15 May 2022 were systematically searched for related published original manuscripts. “…Most commonly, researchers have focused on the effects of sanctions on various aspects of healthcare in Iran. For example, Asadi‐Pooya et al (2022) provide a systematic overview of the Iranian sanctions and note that sanctions have severely restricted patients with thalassemia, hemophilia, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis from receiving adequate medical treatment. Baradaran‐Seyed and Majdzadeh (2013) note a decreased access to medication after sanctions, which led to deaths of patients with complex diseases and cancer, and Ghiasi et al (2016) show that after sanctions were imposed on the Iranian Central Bank in 2013, the availability of both imported and locally manufactured asthma medicines decreased by 19% and 42%, respectively, signifying that domestic substitution for medication is frequently not available as its production might require imported components.…”
