Effects of the hydrothermal circulation on the strain field of the Campanian Plain (southern Italy)

Abstract: Focal mechanisms of earthquakes and fault‐slip data have been collected to constrain the strain regime acting in the hydrothermal zone and surrounding areas of the Campanian Plain (southern Italy), a NW–SE elongated structural depression. The NW–SE striking faults bounding the depression move in response to a NE–SW striking regional extension. Within the depression, an extended hydrothermal circulation occurs related to the Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei and Ischia active volcanoes. In this zone, the strike of the ex… Show more

“…Extensive interdisciplinary literature supports the claim that NW-SE and WNW-ESE oriented tectonic structures may also drive more recent unrests at Campi Flegrei. These include earthquakes occurring along a ~NW-SE preferred strike 45 , 46 and normal NW-SE faults moving in response to a NNE-SSW to NE-SW extension 47 . The two paired deformation sources 11 were active after 1984, until 2010.…”

“…To achieve accurate hypocentre locations, we performed accurate re-picking on digital waveforms of the seismic events with at least six P and four S phases. Seismic events have been relocated by means of the standard HYPO71 algorithm (Lee and Lahr, 1975), using the 1D velocity model adopted in Milano et al (2004). The epicentral distribution of the relocated earthquakes with magnitude greater than 2.0 is shown in Fig.…”

“…In the west, within the Campania Plain, extension was locally accompanied by volcanism, whose emplacement was controlled by the intersecting networks of high‐angle faults (e.g. Orsi et al 1996; Di Vito et al 1999; De Vivo et al 2001; Milia et al 2003; Milano et al 2004).…”
