Effects of the herb mixture, DTS20, on oxidative stress and plasma alcoholic metabolites after alcohol consumption in healthy young men

Abstract: BackgroundThis study was designed to investigate the effect of a herbal mixture extract (DTS20) on the attenuation of oxidative stress and hangover after alcohol consumption in healthy volunteers.MethodsDTS20 consists of Viscum album L. (40%), Lycium chinense L. (30%), Inonotus obliquus (20%), and Acanthopanax senticosus H. (10%). We recruited healthy, nonsmoking, adult men volunteers aged between 21 years and 30 years to participate in a crossover trial. Twenty participants received either one package of plac… Show more

“…Asparagus officinalis ( Kim et al., 2009 ) and red ginseng ( Lee et al., 2014b ) have been reported to have the ability to exert a positive effect on the activity of the hepatic enzymes due to their antioxidant activity. A herbal formulation, "DTS20" has been shown to prevent gastric mucous damage and also accelerate the metabolism of alcohol ( Hong, 2015 ). Hence, it has been widely considered that compounds having antioxidant property would have the ability to enhance the activity of ADH and ALDH.…”

“…by either enhancing the activity of ALDH and/or ADH and thereby assisting in aldehyde and alcohol clearance from the system, respectively. A herbal mixture “DTS 20” containing Viscum album L. (40%), Lycium chinense L. (30%), Inonotus obliquus (20%), and Acanthopanax senticosus H. (10%) has also been studied and found to reduce the oxidative stress and plasma alcohol concentrations ( Hong, 2015 ).…”

“…Alcohol hangover symptoms were relieved by increasing the activities of alcohol degrading enzymes ( 13 ). It was reported that elevation of the activities of alcohol metabolizing enzymes could be beneficial in eliminating of alcohol metabolites ( 13 , 15 , 25 ). Several natural products have been reported to reduce the levels of blood alcohol metabolites by increasing the activities of alcohol degrading enzymes, including Korean pear juice ( 13 ), red ginseng ( 15 ), and herbal mixture ( 25 ).…”
