Effects of the Built Environment on Physical Activity of Adults Living in Rural Settings

Abstract: Research in this area is limited. Associations among elements of the BE and PA among adults appear to differ between rural and urban areas. Considerations for future studies include identifying parameters used to define rural, longitudinal research, and more diverse geographic sampling. Development and refinement of BE assessment tools specific to rural locations are also warranted.

“…Temporary housing complexes were built at sites not originally intended for housing, and so there were limited number of parks or other recreational facilities nearby. As is reported in a recent study which found a positive relationship between physical activity in adults in rural areas and the physical environment (such as pleasant aesthetics, trails, safety, parks, and walkable destinations) [25], physical activity level in older residents in temporary housing might also be determined by the In addition to improving participants' physical activity, this intervention was valuable in providing subjects with the opportunity to gather together for a purpose, which may strengthen ties among temporary housing residents. The participants in this intervention had various levels of physical activity.…”

“…27 Our study differs from the Frost et al review in that we defined rural to exclude town centers whereas they included a wide range of rural definitions. Despite this difference, we also had mixed results when asking how each walkability domain affected our participants' decisions to exercise in their neighborhoods or not.…”

“…Urban parks were the most commonly considered setting. Two categories of environments were conspicuously underrepresented or absent; rural areas had just one review (41), and there were no review articles about gardens or allotments or community gardens other than those used for therapeutic purposes. Also, very few reviews focused on population subgroups.…”
