Effects of temperature, salinity and their interaction on growth of the benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata (Dinophyceae) from Japanese coastal waters

Abstract: Benthic dinoflagellates of the genus Ostreopsis produce palytoxin (PTX)-like compounds. The worldwide distributed Ostreopsis ovata/O. cf. ovata is potentially responsible for outbreaks of human health problems around the coasts of tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions. The present study examined growth responses of an O. cf. ovata strain s0662 collected from coastal waters of Japan with 35 different combinations of temperature (15-35°C) and salinity (20-40) and discusses the bloom dynamics of the organi… Show more

“…proliferation (Morton et al, 1992;Mangialajo et al, 2011;Pistocchi et al, 2011;Fraga et al, 2012;Tanimoto et al, 2013;Yamaguchi et al, 2012a). Results obtained from statistical analyses in this study demonstrated that the effect of temperature on growth of Thai Ostreopsis species/clade/subclades was stronger than those of salinity and temperature-salinity interaction.…”

“…Following a previously reported method (Yamaguchi et al, 2012a;Yoshimatsu et al, 2014), the tested strains were cultured in duplicate PP-capped 50-mL glass test tubes (25 mm  150 mm) with a flat bottom containing f/2 medium in a growth chamber (MLR-351; Sanyo Co., Ltd, Japan) at 25 8C, salinity 30, and light intensity 90-100 mmol photons m À2 s À1 of cool white fluorescent illumination on a 12:12 h L:D cycle. The factorial design of experiment concerned two main effects, temperature (20, 25, 30, 32.5, 35 8C) and salinity (20,25,30,35,40).…”
