Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of pre-treatment with taurine on rats in which MI had been induced using isoproterenol (ISO).Methods: Rats were randomly allocated into three groups; the 1st group is the normal control (C) one, the 2nd is the isoproterenol cardiotoxic (ISO) one and the 3rd group is the taurine pretreated (T-ISO) one. Results:The activities of the cardiac biomarker enzymes, AST, LDH, CK and CK-MB were elevated in the ISO-treated group. The membrane-bound Na + -K + and Ca 2+ ATPase enzyme activities were decreased in the ISO-treated group. The lipid profile either in sera or cardiac tissues was increased in ISO-treated rats except for HDL-cholesterol and phospholipids. The cholesterol ester synthetase (CES) activity was elevated, while lecithin: Cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activities were decreased in the myocardial infarcted rats. In addition, the high level of the troponins I and T was an indication of cardiac necrosis. Pre-treatment with Taurine, however, ameliorated all of these changes, in addition to its effect in improving the oxidation process, as measured by lipid peroxidation and the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase enzymes. Conclusion:Taurine showed amelioration effects on the changes in lipid profile, oxidative stress and myocardial infarction biomarkers and therefore, can be protected against cardiotoxicity.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of taurine (TA) on serum lipid profiles following chronic coadministration of chlorpyrifos (CP) and lead acetate (Pb) in male Wistar rats. Fifty rats randomly distributed into five groups served as subjects. Distilled water (DW) was given to DW group, while soya oil (SO; 1 mL kg(-1)) was given to SO group. The TA group was treated with TA (50 mg kg(-1)). The CP + Pb group was administered sequentially with CP (4.25 mg kg(-1); 1/20th median lethal dose (LD50)) and Pb at 233.25 mg kg(-1) (1/20th LD50), while the TA + CP + Pb group received TA (50 mg kg(-1)), CP (4.25 mg kg(-1)), and Pb (233.25 mg kg(-1)) sequentially. The treatments were administered once daily by oral gavage for 16 weeks. The rats were euthanised, and the blood samples were collected at the termination of the study. Sera obtained from the blood samples were analyzed for total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and malondialdehyde, and also the activities of serum antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase were analyzed. The low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and atherogenic index were calculated. The results showed that CP and Pb induced alterations in the serum lipid profiles and evoked oxidative stress. TA alleviated the disruptions in the serum lipid profiles of the rats partially by mitigating oxidative stress. It was concluded that TA may be used for prophylaxis against serum lipid disorders in animals that were constantly co-exposed to CP and Pb in the environment.

Taurine Modulates Hyperglycemia-Mediated Oxidative Stress and Protects Hepatocytes in Experimental Diabetes

The present study was conducted to investigate the beneficial effects of taurine (TAU) on glucose and lipid metabolism and its positive roles in the correction of oxidative stress diabetes-related complications in STZ diabetic rats. Diabetic rats showed significant (P<0.05) increase in the levels of glucose, HbA1c, AST, ALT, LDH, liver and kidney weights, urea, uric acid, creatinine and significant decrease in the levels of body and pancreas weights, insulin, pancreatic amylase, hexokinase, liver and muscle glycogen, total protein, albumin, antioxidant enzymes and HDL-C. Also, higher levels of cholesterol, TG, total lipids, LDL-C and MDA were noticed in diabetic rats. The taurine administration (50 mg/kg) showed antihyperglycemic effect as indicated by reduced glucose levels, HbA1c and improved insulin level and carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes. In addition, taurine supplementation normalized liver function and inhibited lipid prfile alterations while, kidney weight, urea, creatinine, uric acid, total protein and albumin levels were partially improved. The obtained results revealed that taurine exhibited an inhibitory effect on oxidative stress indices (MDA) and partially improved antioxidantlevels. Taurine could have potential as a pharmaceutical drug for diabetes mellitus (DM). Additional study is needed to investigate whether taurine has the same beneficial effects in human diabetic patients.
