Effects of Tai Chi for Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review

Abstract: [Purpose] The aim of the present study was to seek evidence for the effectiveness of Tai Chi for patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). [Subjects and Methods] Systematic searches were conducted of the China Journals Full-text Database, Pubmed, Medline, Science Direct-Online Journals and CINAHL for studies published between 2000 and 2012. Studies were evaluated based on following inclusion criteria: 1) design: randomized control, clinical trial; 2) subjects: patients with a knee osteoarthritis diagnosis; 3) i… Show more

“…In addition, TNF-α has been demonstrated to have an inhibitory effect on matrix repair, so as to accelerate the degeneration of articular cartilage. In turn, NO is an important inflammatory mediator in knee osteoarthritis progression, acting through increased induction of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) (Ye et al, 2014). In the present study, the NO levels increased in the quiet and the low-and high-intensity exhaustive exercise groups compared with the control group, consistent with findings from clinical studies (Tanaka et al, 2014).…”

“…Diz OA'lı bireylerde Tai Chi, özellikle uygulanabilir bir bütünleşik sağlık uygulamasıdır. Literatürde tai chinin ağrı ve sertliğin azaltılması, fiziksel fonksiyonun iyileştirilmesi ve yaşam kalitesinin yükseltilmesinde yararlı ve güvenli olduğunu gösteren önemli kanıtlar vardır [38][39][40]. Yapılan bir çalışmada Tai Chi egzersizi ile bireylerin vücut kitle indeksinin önemli ölçüde azaldığı, yaşam kalitesinin yükseldiği belirlenerek olup yaşlı OA'lı bireylerin tai chi egzersizine teşvik edilmeleri konusunda öneride bulunulmuştur [41].…”

“…Currently, with no accepted disease-modifying treatment existing, exercise is the mainstay of non-pharmacological therapy, regardless of disease stage or symptom severity (Fransen et al, 2015). A growing number of studies indicate that Tai Chi may improve health in knee OA and other chronic pain diseases (Wang, 2012; Yan et al, 2013; Ye, Cai, Zhong, Cai, & Zheng, 2014). For example, a 12-week randomized Tai Chi or physical therapy (PT) intervention effectively reduced pain and improved the health-related quality of life among 204 individuals with knee OA (Wang et al, 2016).…”
