Boron that appears in borate form in nature is an essential additive to a variety of industrial products. Recently, certain boron compounds have attracted attention in high technology utilization areas owing to their special crystal and optical characteristics. Thermoluminescent (TL) dosimetry that is used to record amount of radiation exposure is one of such areas. Two borates searched for candidacy in TL dosimetry are lithium tetraborate and lithium triborate. These materials are synthesized and metal doped by numerous researchers to be tested for thermoluminescence response. Lithium tetraborate has aroused interest of scientists since 1960s by the courtesy of the thermoluminescence (TL) property. However, lithium triborate is rather new in this area. This study compromises a broad overview including synthesis methods employed for the production of these two materials. Furthermore, the TL properties that have significant effect on the TL dosimetry potential of a compound are noted along with the detailed information on TL measurement procedure specifications.Keywords: Thermoluminescence, dosimetry, lithium borates, synthesis, doping, characterization. BORATESThere are several natural and synthetic borates used in different branches of industry. Natural borates are generally cleaned from their impurities in processing plants and are further treated to more qualified end products (like boric acid, anhydrous boric acid, anhydrous borax, borax pentahydrate,borax decahydrate and sodium perborate) in recrystallizer units. Besides, the variability of borate crystal chemistry [1] allows researchers synthesize numerous borate structures usable in high technology areas. Thermoluminescent (TL) dosimetry used to measure radiation exposure is an important high technology utilization area for these synthetic borates. General Uses of Borates in High TechnologyIt is certain that the interesting crystal structure of borates play an important role for its utilization in high technology. Although the utilization variety of borates is strongly related to its structural variety, in this communication we will concentrate on results of these characteristics rather than chemical background. Indeed, there is extensive number of studies devoted to the crystal structures of borates [1][2][3] which may be refered for detailed information.Owing to the varied crystallinity borates possess large electronic band gaps, attractive nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, chemical and environmental stability, and mechanical strength [3]. 24 IntroduçãoDosimetria é a determinação da exposição ou da dose de radiação em um ponto de um meio específico, que pode ser o ambiente ou o corpo de um indivíduo. Embora a dosimetria de radiação ionizante seja uma atividade presente em áreas diversas, incluindo saúde, indústria, aviação, por exemplo, é na área da saúde que os procedimentos dosimétricos são mais disseminados, porque o princípio ALARA deve ser sempre praticado.Pesquisas sobre novos materiais e metodologias para emprego em procedimentos dosimétricos estão em franco desenvolvimento. No Brasil, vários grupos de pesquisa têm contribuído para o desenvolvimento de materiais dosimétricos e metodologias para uso desses Novos materiais dosimétricos para aplicações em física médica Resumo Este artigo apresenta o estado da arte dos materiais dosimétricos para aplicações em dosimetria pessoal e clínica. O objetivo é fornecer uma visão geral das vantagens e limitações dos dosímetros comerciais disponíveis mais usados, bem como novos materiais estudados na atualidade. Resumimos trabalhos recentes publicados sobre materiais cristalinos e vítreos mais discutidos e com melhores perspectivas para uso prático em dosimetria por Termoluminescência (TL), Luminescência Opticamente Estimulada (OSL), Radiofotoluminescência (RPL) e Ressonância de Spin Eletrônico (ESR), e ainda géis, dosímetros plásticos e emulsões superaquecidas. São tratadas novas formas de uso desses materiais, como fibras para dosimetria ativa, filmes dosimétricos para dosimetria 2D, e materiais que possam ser usados em dosimetria tridimensional. Os trabalhos atuais demonstram uma clara tendência da opção do uso cada vez maior de optoeletrônica para obtenção dos sinais e sua leitura. AbstractThis paper presents the state-of-the-art of dosimetric materials for personal and clinical dosimetry applications. The objective is to provide an overview of the advantages and limitations of the most commonly used commercial dosimeters, as well as new materials currently studied. We summarize recent work published on crystalline and vitreous materials more discussed and with better perspectives for practical use in dosimetry by Thermoluminescence (TL), Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL), Radiophotoluminescence (RPL), and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), as well as gels, plastic dosimeters, and superheated emulsions. New forms of use of these materials are treated, such as fibers for active dosimetry, dosimetric films for 2D dosimetry, and materials that can be used in three-dimensional dosimetry. Current works demonstrate a clear tendency of the option of the increasing use of optoelectronics to obtain the signals and read them.

The field emission scanning electron microscope was used to examine morphology of samples. The TLD-Reader 4500 was used to measurement of thermoluminescence. The glow curves position of Cu-doped and co-doped SnO 2 glass were recorded at about 205 C and 215 C respectively. The linear relationship of dose-TL intensity was observed for both samples. The TLD sensitivity shows that the co-doped SnO 2 glass has almost 6 time higher sensitivity compared to Cu-doped glass. It was found that the theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results for relative energy response. The activation energy and frequency factor of TL glow peak are determined by using the peak shape method.
