Effects of surface-finishing protocols on the roughness, color change, and translucency of different ceramic systems

Abstract: STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Surface-finishing protocols have a mechanical impact on ceramic surfaces that could eventually affect surface topography and light scattering. An optimum protocol is needed to avoid damaging the optical properties of ceramics. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different surface-finishing protocols on the surface roughness, color change, and translucency of ceramic and metal ceramic restorations. MATERIAL AND METHODS Standardized disk-shaped specimens (1.5 × … Show more

“…The optical properties of restorative materials are significantly influenced by the material structure and thickness . In addition, several studies have examined the factors that can affect the optical properties of dental restorative materials, including shade, manufacturing technique, luting agent, background shade, surface texture, and illuminants . This study aimed to evaluate the translucency and opalescence of current monolithic CAD‐CAM restorative materials with different chemical compositions and thicknesses.…”

“…54 TP determinations of ceramic materials were solely used to determine significant effects of the illuminant, 55 surface texture, 56 and surface-finishing technique. 57 Using ceramic materials, TP values measured by the spectroradiometer and the spectrophotometer were found to be significantly different but highly correlated. 58 A significant correlation between the translucency of ceramic materials and polymerization efficiency of underlying luting composites was found using TP determinations.…”

“…15,16 Akar ve ark.nın çalışmasında, yüzey pürüzlülüğündeki azalmayla birlikte seramiklerin ışık geçirgenliğinin, translüsentlik değerlerinin arttığı belirtilmiştir. 17 Günümüzde, seramiklerin yüzey polisaj işlemlerinde kullanılan aletler; silikon karpit, elmas veya alüminyum oksit içerikli lastik frezlerdir. Literatürde, zirkonya yüzeylerin in vitro polisajlarının değerlendirildiği bir çalışmada, elmasla kaplanmış lastik firezlerin pürüzsüz bir yüzey oluşturma üzerine olumlu etkileri belirtilmiştir.…”
