This research was aimed to evaluate the effect of inoculant and crude enzyme of Trichoderma reesei on fermentation quality and rumen digestibility of napier grass silage. This research consisted of two stages. The first stage was fermentation quality using a completely randomized design with three treatments and six replications. The second stage was rumen fermentability using a randomized block design with three treatments and six replications. The treatments of both stages were: T0= control of napier grass silage (Hi-fer+), T1= control + T. reesei inoculant at the level of 2.13 x 10 7 cfu/ kg, and T2= control + crude enzyme from T. reesei at the level of 11.4 unit/kg. Napier grass silage were kept at room temperature and opened 21 d after fermentation. The result of the first stage experiment showed that T2 decreased (P<0.01) dry matter, organic matter, crude fiber, and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and also increased (P<0.05) crude protein, total digestible nutrient (TDN), pH, acetic acid, and propionic acid of napier grass silage while T1 decreased (P<0.01) NDF and increased (P<0.05) propionic acid. The result of the second stage experiment showed that there were no significant differences in rumen pH, in vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibility, total VFA, proportion of VFA, ratio of acetic to propionic acids, and also NH 3 . It is concluded that the addition of crude enzyme from T. reesei could improve fermentation quality of napier grass silage with decreasing NDF and increasing TDN but did not affect rumen fermentability.

INTISARIPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan molases, Lactobacillus plantarum, Trichoderma viride, dan campurannya terhadap kualitas silase total campuran hijauan. Penambahan molases sebanyak 4% (w/w), L. plantarum sebanyak 0,1% (v/w), dan T. viride sebanyak 0,1% (v/w). Setiap perlakuan dibuat 3 kali ulangan, kemudian difermentasikan selama 21 hari secara anaerobik. Variabel yang diamati adalah kualitas fisik, kimia, dan biologis meliputi warna, bau, tekstur, ada tidaknya jamur, pH, kandungan asam laktat, dan amonia. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan rancangan variabel secara Completely Randomized Designs pola searah. Apabila terdapat perbedaan yang nyata, dilanjutkan dengan uji rata-rata antar dua perlakuan dengan uji Duncan's New Multiple Range Test. Uji kualitas fisik menunjukkan warna hijau kekuningan, bau asam, tekstur padat, dan keberadaan jamur sedikit/tidak ada jamur. Penambahan molases saja maupun campuran molases dan L. plantarum/ T. viride menurunkan pH dan konsentrasi amonia (P<0,05), sedangkan kandungan asam laktat mengalami peningkatan (P<0,05). Penambahan molases atau sumber karbohidrat mudah larut merupakan suatu keharusan untuk menghasilkan silase total campuran hijauan yang baik, ditunjukkan dengan pH sebesar 3,60, kandungan asam laktat sebesar 4,28% BK, kandungan amonia sebesar 0,43% BK. BACKGROUND:The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of biological and chemical additives on microbial community, fermentation characteristics, aerobic stability, and in vitro gas production of SuMu No. 2 elephant grass.RESULTS: Aerobic bacteria and yeast were not affected on days 5 and 7 but were significantly (P < 0.224) reduced on days 14, 30, and 60, whereas lactic acid and lactic acid bacteria were significantly (P > 0.001) higher in all ensiling days within all treatment groups. During the ensiling days, the pH, acetic acid, butyric acid, and yeast were decreased in all treatment groups, whereas the Lactobacillus plantarum group and L. plantarum + natamycin group were highly significantly (P > 0.001) decreased. During air exposure, the water-soluble carbohydrates, ammonia nitrogen, lactic acid, and acetic acid were not affected on days 1-4, whereas pH and aerobic bacteria (were significantly (P < 0.05) increased on days 2-4. The addition of Lactobacillus plantarum and natamycin increased the gas production, in vitro dry matter digestibility, and in vitro neutral detergent fiber of SuMu No. 2 elephant grass silages.CONCLUSIONS: The addition of biological and chemical additives, such as L. plantrum alone and the combination with natamycin, affected the undesirable microbial community, fermentation characteristics, aerobic stability, and in vitro gas of SuMu No. 2 elephant grass.
