Effects of Subtherapeutic Concentrations of Chlorhexidine Gluconate on Germ Tube Formation of Oral Candida

Abstract: Objective: The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of brief exposure to subtherapeutic concentrations of chlorhexidine gluconate on germ tube formation of Candida albicans isolates obtained from smokers, diabetics, asthmatics using steroid inhalers and healthy individuals. Materials and Methods: Forty isolates of C. albicans were used in this study. All these isolates were quantified for germ tube formation without exposure to the drug and were used as the control group for data analysis… Show more

“…Thereafter, 300 Candida cells in contiguous fields were counted (under ×40 magnification) and percentage of GT forming cells calculated. A previously used criterion was used for counting . The criteria used: (1) only Candida cells with a GT, without constriction at the junction between the cell and the elongation were counted; (2) clumped cells with GT were excluded; (3) pseudo‐hyphae‐forming Candida cells were excluded.…”

“…Likewise, pretreatment of acrylic dentures with 2% CG has also been shown to suppress the adhesion of the yeast to denture acrylic surfaces . In addition, a recent study has shown that subtherapeutic levels of CG are also effective in suppressing germ tube (GT) formation of oral C. albicans isolates obtained from healthy as well as diabetics, asthmatics using steroid inhalers and smokers . Furthermore, it has been shown that CG alone or in combination with other antimycotic agents were capable of inducing a PAFE as well as modulating virulent attributes of Candida including phospholipase production .…”

“…The remaining C. dubliniensis isolates were from blood (n = 1) and urine samples (n = 6). All yeast isolates were tested for germ tube formation as previously described [19]. Thereafter a presumptive identification of Candida isolates was performed on the basis of the characteristics of colony color on CHROMagar Candida medium (Becton Dickinson Co., Sparks, USA).…”
