Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was photografted with the low-and high-density polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE) plates to provide their surfaces with autohesive and adhesive properties. The chemical composition and wettability of the GMA-grafted LDPE and HDPE (LDPE-g-PGMA and HDPE-g-PGMA) plates remained constant above full coverage of the surfaces with grafted PGMA chains. Autohesive strength obtained with 1,4-dioxane as a good solvent of PGMA increased with an increase in the grafted amount and substrate breaking was observed at the grafted amount of 117 mmol/cm 2 . The grafted amount at substrate breaking was decreased by increasing the temperature and load during heat pressing. Adhesive strength was effectively enhanced by use of multi-functional amine compounds because of the increase in the reaction between primary or secondary amine groups and epoxy groups appended to the grafted PGMA chains. In addition, the decrease in the amine compound concentration and the increase in the number of amino groups in the amine compounds used led to the decrease in the grafted amounts at substrate breaking. Substrate breaking occurred at lower grafted amounts for the HDPE-g-PGMA plates than for the LDPE-g-PGMA plates because the location of the photografting was restricted to the outer surface region for the HDPE plate.

Carbon nanotube-reinforced glass fiber epoxy composite laminates exposed to hygrothermal conditioning

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites (GFRP) were prepared and reinforced with two types of multiwalled carbon nanotubes, i.e., amino-functionalized (ACNT) and pristine nanotubes (PCNT). Incorporation of ACNT leads to a significant decrease in equilibrium water content and diffusion coefficient vis-à-vis GFRP composites when immersed in seawater (SW) and distilled water (DW). The experimental results illustrate that the material degradation of the composites is significantly more on immersion in SW as compared to DW. Interestingly, a decrease in mechanical properties was observed initially; however, at a later stage the trend reversed and a recovery in the mechanical properties was seen. This recovery in mechanical properties is ascribed to the possible secondary crosslinking network between excess sodium ions in seawater with the hydroxyl groups of cured epoxy and also to the unreacted silanols on the glass fiber surface. On the contrary, PCNT composites revealed a continuous decreasing trend in mechanical behavior versus aging duration. The present study suggests that it may be advantageous and safer to re-condition (for 15-20 days) FRP nanocomposite parts before being installed in naval vessels.

The aim of this work is to prepare biodegradable blends of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and starch that can be used for film blowing. In order to increase the compatibility between LDPE and starch, maleic anhydride was used to graft onto the LDPE molecules (LDPE-g-MAH). Mechanical properties together with the soil and enzyme degradation tests of the LDPE/starch and LDPE-g-MAH/starch specimens were studied. After using the proper composition and processing condition, the a f and values of LDPE-g-MAH/starch blown film specimen are significantly higher than those of the LDPE/starch film specimens with the same starch contents. The biodegradation tests showed that most of the starch particles present in LDPE/starch and LDPE-g-MAH/starch specimens can be degraded within 6weeks. Wang, Liu et al. 161 studied the effect of glycerol and LDPE-g-MAH on the properties of LDPE and rice starch blends. As the result, both the tensile strength and the elongation at break followed the order of rice starch/LDPE/glycerol/LDPE-g-MAH blends > rice starch/LDPE/glycerol > LDPE/rice starch blends. The purpose of this study was devoted to prepare the LDPE/biodegradable starch blends by the simple melt blending method, to systematically investigate their structure and properties, and to propose the optimal conditions for application in blowing of plastic bags. In addition, the maleic anhydride grafted LDPE (LDPE-g-MAH) was studied as an alternative to LDPE. The blends obtained at 165°C were characterized by a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the Instron mechanical tester. Moreover, the biodegradability of the synthesized hybrids was performed by evaluating weight loss of samples over time in the soil environment and the enzyme environment. EXPERIMENTAL MaterialsThe low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which was obtained from Asia Polymer Corp. (Taiwan, ROC), had a melt flow index of 0.5g/10min and a density of 923kg/m 3 . The corn starch, composed of 27% amylose and 73%amylopectin, was received from Sigma Chemical Corp. (Steinheim, Germany). The starch was dried at 105°C for 24 hours to a moisture content of less than 1%, before blending. Maleic anhydride (ΜΑΗ) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) were commercial products of Aldrich (Milwaukee, WI).Before use, ΜΑΗ was purified by recrystallization from chloroform and DCP was recrystallized twice by dissolving it in absolute methanol, filtering the solution while hot, and chilling in ice water.
