Effects of solvent adsorption on solution properties of poly(vinyl alcohol)/dimethylsulfoxide/water ternary systems

Abstract: ABSTRACT:In this study, the solvent adsorption phenomena of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in cosolvent mixtures of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO; solvent 1) and water (solvent 2) were investigated. Typically, this cosolvent mixture could form hydrogen-bonded DMSO/(water) 2 complexes, involving one DMSO and two water molecules. Because of the complex formation in the cosolvent mixtures, PVA chains preferentially adsorb water molecules at DMSO mole fraction X 1 Ͻ 0.33, but preferentially adsorb DMSO molecules at X 1 Ͼ 0.3… Show more

“…Further, C–O stretching vibration peak of pure PVA (1083 cm −1 ) turns weaker shifts to the higher side (1094 cm −1 ). The appearance of a (–CONH-bending) peak around 1659 cm −1 and CH deformation peak around 1417 cm −1 in the spectra of PVA-DMSO gel reflect partial oxidation of PVA by DMSO 29,30 followed by removal of water and reduction of DMSO to dimethylsulfide. These observations have been also recorded by Awadhia and Agrawal 31 during studies on PVA-NH 4 SCN-DMSO gel electrolyte.…”

“…Such a mechanism has been applied to the freezing/thawing induced gelation of PVA in aqueous solution mixed with organic solvents. [53][54][55] In this mechanism, the yield of small crystalline nuclei during heating and cooling is the key to the microgelation of PVA 170 -b-PNIPAm 85 during aging at room temperature. The small crystalline nuclei are formed with time by the interchain interaction of PVA, mainly due to hydrogen bonding.…”

“…It has been found that when DMSO is mixed with water in a molar ratio of 1 : 2, one DMSO molecule can form a stable complex with two water molecules through H‐bonds (Figure S2). [ 48 ] In this situation, due to the saturability of H‐bonds, it is hard for water molecules to form H‐bonds with other molecules. To verify that the derivation shown in Figure 3b is affected by the H‐bonds between PMMA and water molecules, the force measurements have been performed in DMSO/water mixture ( n : n = 1 : 2, Figure S3).…”
