Effects of Soldier-Ant Mound (SAM) on the Strength Characteristics of Lateritic Clay Soils

Abstract: This work was carried out in collaboration between all authors. Author AOO designed the study, performed the analysis, wrote the protocol and wrote the first draft of the manuscript and managed literature searches. Author AOA managed parts of the analyses of the study and literature searches. Author FA collected the SAM materials and carried out the experimental investigations. All authors read and approved the final manuscript.

“…Soils play an integral role in almost every aspect of civil engineering practice, ranging from road construction to buildings, dams, bridges, etc. Lateritic soils particularly are commonly utilized for various earthwork projects and the construction of road pavement in most tropical nations, including Nigeria, due to their accessibility and inexpensive cost [1]. However, it has been noted that the poor geotechnical characteristics of lateritic soils, which usually act as the major components of sub-grade and base materials, are principal reasons for roadway failure [2].…”

“…However, there is considerable shrinkage when they lose water [8]. In their natural conditions, a number of lateritic clay soils have poor engineering qualities, occasionally exhibiting severe swelling, low strength, excessive plasticity, and a large drop in strength when exposed to water [1].…”

“…Cement, clay and laterite [10][11][12] has been used in the production of blocks for building materials till this present time. Cement used for building blocks has some advantages such as high bulk density, low water absorption, good binding properties, good compressive and fracture strength, but also has disadvantages such as high cost of production, CO 2 emission, high energy consumption and heavy weight [11][12][13][14][15]. Sustainability in building materials is very important and can also be achieved through the use of local materials [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11].…”
