Stacked phosphogypsum (PG) can not only cause a waste of resources but also has a serious negative impact on the surface environment. Phosphogypsum backfilling (PGB) in the underground goaf is a useful approach to effectively address the PG environmental problems. However, the effects of this approach on the groundwater environment have not been studied. Therefore, the present study aims to assess the spatiotemporal evolution mechanism of total phosphorus (TP) in groundwater to solve the diffusion regular pattern of TP in PGB bodies, as well as to manage and mitigate the impacts of TP on the groundwater system. In this study, leaching toxicity experiments and a numerical groundwater simulation software (GMS10.4) were combined to develop a three-dimensional conceptual model for predicting the groundwater flow and contaminant transport under steady-state conditions in a phosphorus mine in Anhui. The results showed a lower TP concentration than the TP standard concentration (0.2 mg/L) at a source concentration of 0.59 mg/L. However, groundwater TP source concentrations of 1.88 and 2.46 mg/L in the study area were found to exceed the standard concentration for a certain time and areas. In addition, the transport and dispersion of TP are influenced not only by the groundwater flow field, drainage ditches, rivers, and wells but also by the adsorption and attenuation effects of the soil that occur during the transport process, affecting the dispersion distance and distribution of groundwater TP concentrations. The results of the present study can promote the development of groundwater-friendly PGB technology, providing a great significance to the construction of green mines and the promotion of ecological civilization.

The availability and retention of phosphorus (P) in soils under recovery process after mining operations play an important role in the management of this nutrient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the P adsorption in a reconstituted soil as a function of two forest recovery processes after bauxite mining. We evaluated three systems: native forest (FOR), planting of forest seedlings after bauxite mining (TPL), and natural regeneration of vegetation after bauxite mining (NRV). In each system, eight sampling plots were deployed. In each plot, we collected litter and soil samples. The soil samples were collected at depths of 0–5, 5–10, 10–20, and 20–40 cm, for soil chemical analysis and adjustment of P adsorption isotherms. We also performed an inventory of the tree vegetation to obtain basal area (G) and species diversity (H′). Forest was significantly superior with respect to most soil fertility, litter, and vegetation attributes, followed by natural regeneration and planting. In general, the adsorption curves and maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity (MPAC) in soil followed the order planting > natural regeneration > forest. We observed a negative relationship between phosphorus adsorption and soil organic matter, potential acidity, and available phosphorus. This result highlights the importance of biomass conservation and maintenance to ensure phosphorus availability in reclamation practices. Furthermore, such results indicate that both soil cover and plant species diversity should be considered when selecting species to improve P availability for reclamation of mined areas.

Soil phosphorus (P) is pivotal for crop health and growth. We collated a dataset spanning 65 studies from 19 countries to quantify the effects of both natural and anthropogenic factors on P dynamics (dataset provided). Our meta‐analysis encompassed five variables: the type of fertilizer (chemical or organic fertilizer), tillage practices (tillage or no‐till), land use (cultivated or forest), soil texture (either loam soil or sandy loam soil), and soil depth (surface or subsurface). The interplay between soil management strategies, especially those encompassing fertilizer application and tillage, and soil phosphorus dynamics is well established. Our quantitative data suggests the use of organic fertilizers relates to a significant 82% increase in soil Olsen‐P content. Additionally, while the no‐till method has resulted in only a slight 1.6% increase in Total‐P, it has brought about a remarkable 60% increase in organic phosphorus, especially NaHCO3‐Po, in contrast to conventionally tilled soils. Further, we found that the concentrations of Total‐P and Olsen‐P in surface loam soils is elevated, being 24.8% and 1023.6% higher, respectively, compared to subsurface loam soils. In sandy loam soils, these values are 35.3% and 872.2% higher, respectively. These meta‐analysis data highlight how soil management practices can cause variation in P species in soil. They not only underscore potential strategies for refined phosphorus use in diverse farming contexts but also pave the way for further research focusing on agricultural P management.
