The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of mixed Bacillus on growth, water quality and disease resistance against Vibrio harveyi in whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Postlarval shrimp (PL30) were fed with (a) a basal diet (the control), (b) a diet containing mixed freeze‐dried Bacillus probiotics (FB) and (c) addition of mixed microencapsulated Bacillus probiotics (MB) in culture water. Addition of FB and MB probiotics improved (p < .05) growth, feed efficiency, survival and culture water quality (ammonia and nitrite) compared to the control group although there was no difference (p > .05) between the two treated groups. Bacillus numbers in gastrointestinal tracts and culture water of FB‐ and MB‐administrated shrimp were higher (p < .05) than in the control. After a 30‐day culture, shrimp were infected with V. harveyi and monitored for 10 days. A significant reduction (p < .05) in cumulative mortality was observed in FB‐ and MB‐supplemented shrimp (43.24% and 45.05%, respectively), compared to the control (63.06%). This finding demonstrated that administration of microencapsulated probiotics was as effective as freeze‐dried probiotics for improving growth, feed efficiency, survival, Bacillus in gastrointestinal tracts, water quality (ammonia and nitrite) and conferring disease resistance to V. harveyi.

The current research was conducted to examine the benefits of Mentha longifolia (ML) administration through diet on growth performance and haematological, biochemical, and immunological parameters of Caspian kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum). Fish with average weight of 3 g were fed for 8 weeks with diets supplemented with 0%, 2%, 4% and 6% ML‐extract. Feeding with 6% ML for 8 weeks significantly improved the growth performance. The highest values in total protein content, protease and esterase activities were observed in the 6% ML. Feeding with 4% and 6% ML led to a significant increase in the alternative complement, respiratory burst activities and total immunoglobulins in blood as well as lysozyme activity in the mucus and serum. The enhancement of skin mucus immune parameters was observed in fish fed with dietary (≥4%) ML supplement. The mucosal antibacterial effects revealed that the highest ML concentration (6%) had the maximum bacterial growth inhibition zone diameter (mm) and MIC compared with other groups in the study. White blood cell numbers and haematocrit values were significantly higher than in the control groups following the use of 4% and 6% ML. The highest red blood cell counts resulted from the use of 6% ML. Although 4% and 6% ML led to a decrease in the number of lymphocytes, the neutrophils increased after using the same dose, compared with the control group. Triglycerides levels significantly decreased in fish fed with 4% and 6% ML; however, no significant changes were observed in other blood biochemical parameters. Thus, it can be concluded that diets supplemented with ML‐extract could significantly impact Caspian kutum by improving growth performance and boosting their immune response.

Alginate is rich in bioactive compounds and has been known to act as a stimulator on the innate immune system. The objective of this study is to determine polysaccharide and oligosaccharide alginate yield, that percentage inhibition with a different type of extraction, to evaluate growth performance as well as immune response by oxygen stress tolerance. Thermal heating with oven laboratory at 140oC for 4.5 hr was done to breakdown the polysaccharide into oligosaccharide. The extraction was conducted by maceration, filtration, precipitation, and centrifugation. Factorial design with two factors was implemented to 260 Zebrafish and reared in thirteen aquariums (20 fish per aquarium) for 12 days. Zebrafish was fed at different dose (4.0g; 6.0g; 8.0g.kg-1) and different type of extraction [noEDTA/noKCl; KCl; EDTA and (EDTAandKCl)]. The evaluation of radical scavenging activity was done spectrophotometrically at 515 nm. Results showed that the highest alginate yield either polysaccharide or oligosaccharide was gained from KCL treatments, percentage inhibition (82.61%), growth performance as well as tolerance of stress (P<0.05). The best growth performance was reached in oligosaccharide supplementation at 6.0g.kg-1 treatment. It can be concluded that alginate oliogosaccharide produced by thermal heating enhanced the antioxidant activity, boost the fish’s immune system, proofed by better growth performance and more tolerant to the low oxygen stress.
