Effects of social comparison on stereotyping

Abstract

This thesis examines the effects of a social comparison process on stereotyping Hispanics. Using a reading of an Asian-American success essay, the estimation of perceived opportunity for success in American society was studied. Similarly, the degree of stereotyping was examined. Finally, the estimation of perceived discrimination against Hispanics was looked at. Research shows that estimates of opportunity were not changed by reading the Asian success essay. For stereotyping of Hispanics, Caucasians and Asians showed more negative stereotypes after reading the success essay. For perceived discrimination, Caucasians paradoxically had higher perceptions of discrimination after reading the success essay. There was no difference in perceptions of discrimination for Asians after reading the success essay. Again unexpectedly, Hispanics showed lower perceptions of discrimination after reading the Asian success essay.
