A stimulation of leaf area growth was reported when Agropyron smithii in Montana natural grassland was exposed to 18, 36 and 80 ppb of SO^ with and without added nitrogen (Milchunas et al, 1981): with N fertilization, leaf area increased as the level of SO.^ increased. However, these workers did not report plant weights, and an increase in leaf area may not have represented a corresponding weight increase: it is well established that in polluted plants leaf area can increase without weight increase through leaves becoming bigger and thinner (Bell et al, 1979;Jones & Mansfield, 1982;Whitmore, Davies & Mansfield, 1985).…”
