Effects of sevoflurane anesthesia on righting reflex and hemolymph gas analysis variables for Chilean rose tarantulas (Grammostola rosea)

Abstract: Mean ± SD induction and recovery times were 16 ± 5.91 minutes and 29 ± 21.34 minutes, respectively. Significant differences were detected for Po2, base excess, and glucose and ionized magnesium concentrations between hemolymph samples obtained before anesthesia and those obtained after induction of anesthesia. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE-Results of this study suggested that the use of sevoflurane as an anesthetic agent for Chilean rose tarantulas was safe and effective. Various hemolymph sample gas anal… Show more

“…Inhalant anesthetics such as isoflurane and sevoflurane are used clinically for the anesthesia of terrestrial invertebrates [ 33 , 34 , 35 ]. It was reported that isoflurane was used for anesthesia by two respondents and for euthanasia by one respondent.…”

“…In terms of anaesthetics, I primarily use inhalable anaesthetics (isoflurane or sevoflurane impregnated cotton wool) and place the spider into a negative air pressure space (such as an isolator or enclosed fume cupboard); you can modify the concentration of gas by differing the distance of the cotton wool. These are both effective and safe in many theraphosid species (Dombrowski and others 2013, Zachariah and others 2014, MacMillan and others 2017). An induction chamber can be used to induce anaesthesia, but the ability to maintain anaesthesia is more challenging (especially when considering the exposure risks).…”

“…For evaluation of anaesthetic effect, loss of the righting reflex is a commonly used anaesthetic end point in studies using laboratory or exotic animals for assessment and comparison of potency of various anaesthetic agents ( Joo and others 2001 , Heaton-Jones and others 2002 , Diaz-Gil and others 2015 , Zachariah and others 2014 ). This is performed by manually placing the animal in dorsal recumbency and then observing for the animal to spontaneously return to sternal recumbency.…”
