Effects of sesamin on chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan synthesis induced by interleukin-1beta in human chondrocytes

Abstract: BackgroundNumerous studies have reported on the health benefits of sesamin, a major lignin found in sesame (S. indicum) seeds. Recently, sesamin was shown to have the ability to promote chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan synthesis in normal human chondrocytes. This study assesses the anti-inflammatory effect of sesamin on proteoglycans production in 3D chondrocyte cultures.MethodsTo evaluate the effects of sesamin on IL-1β-treated human articular chondrocytes (HAC) pellets, the pellets were pre-treated with IL-1… Show more

“…In our study, we proved that sesamin promoted chondrogenesis both in vitro and in vivo in the process of fracture healing. Sesamin was also found to enhance GAGs synthesis and alleviate IL-1β induced inflammation within human chondrocytes [ 35 ], which further supported our conclusion that sesamin supplement facilitated the endochondral ossification process during osteoporotic fracture healing.…”

“…These genes regulate chondrogenesis and their expression levels are found to increase during cartilage development. A previous study showed that pretreatment of IL-1β in human articular chondrocyte pellets suppressed the expression of the ACAN gene and upregulated the expression of the catabolic genes [31]. Nevertheless, no report exists on the induction of the cytokine combination on the anabolic mechanisms, and the changes after cytokine withdrawal are still debatable.…”

“…Sesame seeds are rich in B vitamins-niacin, thiamine, and vitamin B6, essential for proper cellular function and metabolism. Sesame seeds contain sesamin -a compound with antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects reported to soothe arthritic knee pain [97]. Ground sesame seed (sesame flour) can be used in smoothies, fish batter, baking, and more.…”
