Effects of salmon calcitonin treatment on serum and synovial fluid bone formation and resorption markers in osteoporosis patients

Abstract

In osteoporosis, salmon calcitonin treatment affects synovial fluid bone formation and absorption marker levels. Advanced studies are needed to evaluate the mechanisms by which this takes place, and to explain the relationship between osteoporosis and articular cartilage metabolism.

“…It was shown that very elderly Chinese men with COPD had lifted serum levels of β-CTX and OC compared with those without COPD, a finding similar to that by Wang et al 23 There were several factors potentially responsible for the enhanced BTM levels, such as continuous hypoxia, hypercarbia, weakened sports ability and frequent glucocorticoids medications. 24,25 In line with the results from some studies in recent years, 26,27 it was shown that very elderly Chinese men who had abnormal bone mass manifested higher BTM levels than those who had normal bone mass. Elevated BTM levels are usually indicative of overactive osteoclast function, resulting in enhanced bone resorption compared with bone formation, leading to accelerated bone loss and decreased bone mass.…”

“…Thank you for your interest in our paper entitled, “Effect of salmon calcitonin treatment on serum and synovial fluid bone formation and resorption markers in osteoporosis patients”. 1 In this study, we aimed to identify more specific parameters for osteoporosis diagnosis and osteoporosis treatment effectivity in relation to synovial fluid and to reveal the relationship between joint cartilage and osteoporosis. Apart from osteoporosis, as determined by bone resorption and formation products in synovial fluid, these results can also be interpreted for the evaluation of osteolytic activity in the joint which is significant for implant osteolysis.…”
