“…Tsui and Chu showed that Roundup ® or the surfactant used are more toxic than glyphosate alone in bacteria (Vibrio fischeri) and in different aquatic plant and animal species. Such a result has also been demonstrated in freshwater oligochaetes (Contardo-Jara et al, 2009), amphibians (Howe et al, 2004;Hedberg and Wallin, 2010) and mammals, including humans (Peixoto, 2005;Pieniążek et al, 2004).…”

“…In the blackworm, Lumbriculus variegatus, exposure to Roundup Ultra ® led to a significant increase in both soluble glutathione S-transferase (sGST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD); exposure to glyphosate led to an elevation of sGST but to a lesser extent (Contardo-Jara et al, 2009). In melanophores from Xenopus laevis, Hedberg and Wallin (2010) reported that Roundup ® formulations inhibit intracellular transport through the disassembly of the cytoskeleton, possibly by interfering with intracellular Ca 2+ -balance. According to Peixoto (2005), glyphosate alone did not impact the bioenergetics of isolated rat liver mitochondria, in contrast to Roundup formulation products.…”

“…There is evidence that the bioaccumulation of glyphosate may be greater than predicted from the log K OW value alone and the bioconcentration factor (BCF) is increased for glyphosate in the presence of POEA in the aquatic environment (Contardo-Jara et al, 2009). It has been suggested that the same function POEA provides, by enhancing glyphosate transport into plant cells, also facilitates increased permeability in animal cells (Hedberg and Wallin, 2010). The potential for bioaccumulation of glyphosate has also been observed in terrestrial snails (Helix aspersa) fed a diet contaminated with glyphosate (Druart et al, 2011), water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) exposed to pure glyphosate, and also in tissue of carp (Cyprinus carpio) and tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) that were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (Wang et al, 1994).…”

“…Hedberg and Wallin (2010) showed that pesticides inhibit intracellular transport of the melanopores of the fish, Xenopus laevis resulting a change in body colouration. Similarly, the change of the body colouration of the tilapia in the present experiment may be due to the toxicity effect of Trebon ® .…”
