As one of the greatest inventions of human beings, the electric machine (EM) has realized the mutual conversion between electrical energy and mechanical energy, which has essentially led humanity into the age of electrification and greatly promoted the progress and development of human society. This paper will briefly review the development of EMs in the past two centuries, highlighting the historical milestones and investigating the driving force behind it. With the innovation of theory, the progress of materials and the breakthrough of computer science and power electronic devices, the mainstream EM types has been continuously changing since its appearance. This paper will not only summarize the basic operation principle and performance characteristics of traditional EMs, but also that of the emerging types of EMs. Meanwhile, control and drive system, as a non-negligible part of EM system, will be complementarily introduced. Finally, due to the background of global emission reduction, industrial intelligentization and transportation electrification, EM industry will usher again in a golden period of development. Accordingly, several foreseeable future developing trends will be analyzed and summarized.

Design of a High-Resolution Instantaneous Torque Sensor Based on the Double-Eccentric Modulation Principle

A novel non-contact instantaneous torque sensor is proposed in this paper. The mechanical structure of the torque sensor mainly consists of two eccentric sleeves rotating about an elastic shaft. The measurement of torque is transformed into the measurement of the phase difference between the eccentric sleeves. Eddy current sensors are used to measure distance changes between their probes and the eccentric sleeves. The phase is modulated by the distance changes when any torque applied to the elastic shaft the demodulation principle of the phase relies on solving simple trigonometric functions without any complex signal processing methods. Therefore, the acquisition of torque can be performed instantaneously without any accumulation of time or integer-period sampling. The proposed sensor has a simple structure with no electrical components within the rotational parts. Additionally, the proposed sensor facilitates the measurement of static torque, dynamic torque, and even reciprocating torque over a wide range of angular speeds. The sensor was calibrated by a torsion-testing setup and experimental results indicate that the sensitivity of the sensor is 23.05N m/ • , the sum of squares due to error is 0.09449, and the rootmean-squared error is 0.1375. The non-linearity is 0.914%. The proposed sensor accuracy is 0.06%.

The flat torque-angle characteristic of torque motor plays a decisive role in the control quality of electro-hydraulic servo and proportional valve. To solve the issue that the current wet-type torque motor for two-dimensional (2D) valve does not have flat torque-angle characteristic, a method for adjusting the flat torque-angle characteristic of torque motor for 2D valve based on magnetic saturation of tooth tip is proposed. Taking the current limited angle torque motor with rectangular tooth (TM-R) as an application example, the rectangular teeth on the stator are replaced by sharp teeth to form a novel torque motor with sharp tooth (TM-S), and the flat torque-angle characteristic can be obtained by constructing magnetic saturation of tooth tip. The variation trends of magnetic permeance in each magnetic saturation region of the tooth tip are analyzed. The torque-angle characteristics of TM-S and TM-R under different control currents are compared. Prototypes of TM-S and TM-R with optimized parameters are designed and manufactured, and special experimental benches are built for static and dynamic test. Experimental results are basically consistent with the theoretical analysis. The comparative study shows that the torque-angle characteristic of TM-R is a downward curve, while the torque-angle characteristic of TM-S is an approximate flat curve. The research validates the effectiveness of the proposed method, which can both realize the flat torque-angle characteristic and improve the dynamic response of torque motor. Finally, the proposed method can be further applied to other rotary and direct-acting electro-mechanical converter (EMC) with multi-tooth structure.
