Effects of resveratrol on methotrexate-induced intestinal injury

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Methotrexate (MTX) is an anticancer drug. Many studies have reported that MTX causes oxidative stress-associated damage in the small intestine. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible protective effect of resveratrol (RES), an antioxidant, against MTX-induced damage in the small intestine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four Spraque Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups; the control group, the RES group given 20 mg/kg RES for 10 days, the MTX group given single dose 30… Show more

“…Treatment with resveratrol ameliorated methotrexate‐induced intestinal injury (it was associated with lower histopathological and apoptotic scores). It also decreased tissue MDA levels and enhanced SOD and CAT activities and total glutathione (GSH) in vivo . A recent report showed that resveratrol was more effective than 5‐aminosalicylic acid and could activate the nuclear factor erythroid‐2 and PPAR‐γ pathways in cytokine‐stimulated human intestinal cells, both of which are considered new therapeutic targets in IBD .…”

“…RES, a natural plant polyphenol, has been proven to exhibit outstanding antioxidant function. Yulug et al [ 36 ] reported that adding RES to the diet of mice could reduce MDA content and increase the activities of SOD and CAT. Liu et al [ 9 ] found that adding RES to the diet of black-bone chickens under HS could increase SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT activity and reduce MDA content in serum.…”

“…Many studies have examined the use of RES as a therapeutic agent to treat various pathological and metabolic disorders (15). In previous studies, the protective effects of resveratrol on MTX-induced liver damage (29), intestinal damage (30,31) and ileum damage (32) has been reported.…”
