Effects of Resistive Jaw-Opening Exercise with Elastic Resistance Bands on Suprahyoid Muscle Activation and Tongue Strength in the Elderly: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Background: The jaw-opening exercise (JOE) is designed to strengthen the suprahyoid muscles. However, it is difficult to apply this strength-training exercise to subjects in a systematic fashion. Objective: This study examined the effect of resistive JOE on suprahyoid muscle activity and tongue strength in the elderly through the use of an elastic band. Methods: Eight elderly people aged ≥65 years … Show more

“…It is preferable to provide the opportunity to set individual power and traction ratios. Elastic bands can be used to strengthen certain muscle groups, and also affect flexibility and balance (Oh, 2021). The benefits of resistance bands have been proven to be real after being used by senior classes and their use also has a fairly high level of safety if done under the supervision of a trainer.…”

“…These outcomes generally depended on the interventions, which included the clinical evaluation of some parameters, survival and success rates, and the prognosis of intervention. In addition, the exercises of perioral muscles, including the tongue, has been of increasing interest [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Based on the significant effects of oral conditions and oral functions on systemic conditions, it must be very important to show the effects of the novel oral rehabilitations on dental and oral diseases, oral functions, and systemic conditions from multiple points of view, and to review the etiology, treatment procedures, and the clinical impacts of oral rehabilitation on specific oral diseases and conditions.…”
