Effects of Reduction Pretreatment on the Internal Quality of Casting Billets

Abstract: Reduction pretreatment is a novel process to improve the internal quality of casting slabs, in which limited works are available. This paper therefore examines the application of reduction pretreatment to casting billets to investigate the improvement of microstructures and properties. The casting billets obtained with/without the reduction pretreatment were measured to reveal the effects of this technique. The results indicate that, a certain amount of reduction pretreatment is capable of closing porosity, ac… Show more

“…To control internal defects, researchers proposed many processes such as the soft reduction (SR) process [8,9] and heavy reduction (HR) process. Compared with the conventional process, the HR process applies a larger equivalent strain through a small reduction amount, pressuring the billet's internal shrinkage and porosity [10,11], breaking the dendrite [12], refining the grain, and improving density and segregation [13] based on the temperature gradient rolling. Liu et al [11,13] found that large deformation, induced by temperature gradient…”

“…The main content of this article is to further study the influence of the RP process on the thick plate quality based on the previous research [14,25]. For this purpose, two billets were produced in the laboratory, and the RP process was applied to one of them.…”
