This paper investigates recent developments in the field of zinc oxide varistors' development using nanocomposite materials. In addition, the materials under discussion have attracted academic and industrial interests due to their dramatic improvement in characteristics at nanofiller contents. Moreover, the varieties and forms of zinc oxide varistors, as well as the structure and properties of zinc oxide varistors, are discussed in this article. Zinc oxide varistors have traditionally been filled with synthetic or natural inorganic compounds to improve their properties or simply to save cost. In addition, this paper investigates the performance evaluation of zinc oxide varistors by incorporating alkaline-earth and rare-earth metal nanofillers. These applications require multifunctionality in a single material, which is rare in zinc oxide varistors. Zinc oxide varistors incorporating with other materials is a cost-effective technique to create multifunctional materials. The property improvement in nanocomposite systems, where the fillers typically have nanometre-scale dimensions, probably occurs with a tradeoff. This article reviews the progress in developing ZnO-V2O5-based metal oxide varistors (MOVs) using powder metallurgy (PM) techniques. The aim is to create new, advanced ceramic materials for MOVs with comparable or superior functional properties to ZnO-Bi2O3 varistors using fewer dopants. The survey emphasizes the importance of a homogeneous microstructure and desirable varistor properties, such as high nonlinearity (α), low leakage current density (JL), high energy absorption capability, reduced power loss, and stability for reliable MOVs. This study investigates the effect of V2O5 and MO additives on the microstructure, electrical and dielectric properties, and aging behavior of ZnO-based varistors. The findings show that MOVs with 0.25–2 mol.% V2O5 and MO additives sintered in air over 800 °C contain a primary phase of ZnO with a hexagonal wurtzite structure and several secondary phases that impact the MOV performance. The MO additives, such as Bi2O3, In2O3, Sb2O3, transition element oxides, and rare earth oxides, act as ZnO grain growth inhibitors and enhance the density, microstructure homogeneity, and nonlinearity. Refinement of the microstructure of MOVs and consolidation under appropriate PM conditions improve their electrical properties (JL ≤ 0.2 mA/cm2, α of 22–153) and stability. The review recommends further developing and investigating large-sized MOVs from the ZnO-V2O5 systems using these techniques.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of the sintering temperature on the microstructural, morphological and electrical characteristics of Zinc oxide (ZnO)-based varistors. Design/methodology/approach This study used a conventional method to design and produce ZnO varistors by sintering ZnO powder with small amounts of various metal oxides. Furthermore, the effect of sintering temperature on varistor properties of (Bi, Co, Cr, Sb, Mn)-doped ZnO ceramics was investigated in the range of 1280–1350 °C. Findings The obtained results showed an EB value of 2109.79 V/cm, a Vgb value of 0.831 V and a nonlinear coefficient (α) value of 19.91 for sample sintered at temperature of 1300 °C. In addition, the low value of tan δ at low frequency range confirmed that the grain boundaries created in 1300 °C sintering temperature were obviously good. Originality/value Based on the previous research on the ZnO-based varistors, a thorough study was carried out on these components to improve their electrical characteristics. Thus, it is necessary that those varistors have low leakage current and low value of dissipation factor to ensure their good quality. High breakdown fields and nonlinearity coefficients are also required in such kind of components. The effect of sintering temperature on the varistor properties of the new compositions (zinc, bismuth, manganese, chrome, cobalt, antimony and silicon oxides)-doped ZnO ceramics was studied in the range of 1280–1350 °C. Also, the microstructure and the phase evolution of the samples sintered at various temperatures (1280 °C, 1300 °C, 1320 °C and 1350 °C) were investigated according to X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope measurements.
