Effects of race on blood loss in spinal fusions for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Abstract: OBJECTIVEPosterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) can be associated with significant blood loss. It has been suggested that blood loss is greater in different racial groups. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in blood loss between African American and Caucasian patients undergoing PSF for AIS.METHODSA retrospective review was performed of patients aged 10–18 years with AIS who were treated with PSF from 2014 to 2017 at a single children’s healthcare system. “…These studies investigated hospitalization rate for septic arthritis, rate of implant removal after internal fixation of femoral shaft fractures, and postoperative outcomes following posterior spinal fusion. [25][26][27] The study investigating the rate of hospitalization for septic arthritis found that White and African American children had increased rates of hospitalization for septic arthritis in comparison to the Asian and Hispanic pediatric patients. 26 Dodwell and colleagues examined the rate of implant removal, including, plates, screws, and intramedullary nails, following internal fixation of femoral shaft fractures.…”
