Effects of Pterygium on Ocular Aberrations

Abstract: Purpose: To compare high-order aberration between the eyes with pterygium and normal fellow eyes.Method: This comparative cross-sectional study comprised 31 patients with unilateral pterygium. NIDEK OPD-Scan wavefront aberrometry was performed in all patients in both eyes. Then, aberometric parameters were compared between the eyes. Results: Sixty-two eyes of 31 patients (23 men and 8 women) with a mean age of 42.5 6 5.9 years were included in the study. Root mean square (RMS) of total higher-order aberration i… Show more

“…The relationship between pterygium size and ocular wavefront aberrations has been investigated in previous studies. Zare et al 20 reported that with an increasing size of pterygium, all RMS of modes and orders increased, including HOAs, odd and even higher-order aberrations, third-order aberrations, fourth-order aberrations, total coma, total trefoil, and total tetrafoil. However, the RMS of spherical aberration has not been associated with pterygium size.…”

“…Mootha et al reported a series of patients with longstanding nasal pterygia associated with deep corneal marks at the level of the endothelium and descement membrane. 11 In this study, we also evaluated the effects of the pterygium surgery on the ACD and ACA. The Pentacam is a combined device consisting of a slit illumination system and a Scheimpflug camera which rotates around the eye.…”

“…Therefore patients with pterygium may have significant visual symptoms despite visual axis sparing and appreciated spectacle correction. [10][11][12] Previous reports have demonstrated that the topographic changes of the cornea and the visual impairment induced by pterygia can be reversed following removal of the pterygia. [7][8][9][10] In addition, optical qualities such as contrast sensitivity may improve significantly after surgery.…”

“…Among these, low-order aberrations such as corneal astigmatism [3][4][5][6][7] are the most studied. 5,6,22,23 Subsequent studies have shown that these aberrations decreased significantly after pterygium excision [8][9][10][11][23][24][25] and that these changes continue to improve throughout the first year after surgery. 5,22 High-and low-order aberrations in patients with pterygium are greater than in control subjects, and their magnitude is correlated to the size of pterygium.…”
