Effects of Probiotics on Gut Microbiota in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Clinical Trial

Abstract: Consumption of probiotic yogurt by patients with IBD may help to improve intestinal function by increasing the number of probiotic bacteria in the intestine and colon. However, many more studies are required in order to prove the concept.

“…Since a specific causal treatment is not yet available, there is a great interest to develop new and safe strategies that could restore microbiota composition and ameliorate the altered immune response responsible for the inflammatory status. This could be the case of nutritional approaches based on probiotic administration, as it has been reported in previous studies performed in humans . However, the mechanisms involved in the beneficial effects exerted by probiotics are not completely clear, and their impact on the microbiota has not been extensively studied in these intestinal conditions.…”

“…Probiotics are microorganisms taken as part of nutritional intake or oral supplementation that, in sufficient quantities, are purported to alter or restore balance to host gastrointestinal flora . Probiotic supplementation has been promoted for the treatment or prevention of various health conditions, including Clostridium difficile infection, antibiotic‐associated diarrhea, and inflammatory bowel disease , although, to date, high‐quality randomized clinical trials are of limited size and scope . At the same time, over‐the‐counter (OTC) access and increased marketing of probiotics have not only led to widespread availability but also to increasing use in the general population .…”

“…Also, probiotics can increase immune cell proliferation and decrease the pro-inflammatory cytokines production (3,23). It is evident that NF-κB is involved in controlling cellular response to various stimuli and plays a particularly considerable role in response to inflammation by triggering production of transiently expressed protein synthesis and protein processing (24)(25)(26).…”
