Effects of probiotics and application methods on performance and response of broiler chickens to an Eimeria challenge

Abstract: Coccidiosis is an inherent risk in the commercial broiler industry and inflicts devastating economic losses to poultry operations. Probiotics may provide a potential alternative to the prophylactic use of anticoccidials in commercial production. This study evaluated the effects of probiotic applications (feed and water) on bird performance and resistance to a mixed Eimeria infection in commercial broilers. On day of hatch, 1,008 commercial male broilers (Cobb 500) were assigned to 1 of 6 treatments (8 replicat… Show more

“…The results of this study suggest that the combination of probiotics and coccidiosis vaccine can, when compared to untreated controls, result in better performance and intestinal response. Early establishment of beneficial microbiota by probiotics can inhibit pathogens thus potentiating a protective effect and enhancing host resistance to infection while reducing the need for prophylactic drug usage [5, 19, 38]. As PoultryStar is a product that contains multiple probiotic species of bacteria, there is a greater potential that such probiotics can be active in a wider range of conditions, similar to other multi-strain probiotics, resulting in greater efficacy [3, 39].…”

“…The potential consequences of coccidiosis vaccine administration at a young age could be overcome by proper and uniform delivery of the vaccine, as well as the chick having a healthy intestinal tract colonized by a normal pathogen-free microbiota [13, 15]. Probiotics have the potential to enhance host defenses and affect the digestive microbiota positively, while protecting against colonization by harmful bacteria and maintaining intestinal integrity [13, 15, 1719]. Based on these findings, probiotics may be able to attenuate the negative consequences of early vaccine administration.…”

“…Probiotics also influenced humoral and cell-mediated immune responses by increasing antibody production and upregulating T lymphocyte numbers and associated responses [15][16][17]. Probiotics have proven their ability to enhance the immune response by promoting the clearance of several economically important pathogens such as Eimeria spp., Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens, further asserting their potential use as an antibiotic alternative [6,[18][19][20].…”

“…The performance improvements seen in SYNBIO were previously reported by Eckert et al, 2010. Enhanced performance promoted by synbiotic products may be related to the improvement in nutrient absorption, reduction of pathogens colonization, and stimulation of the immune response [19,24,25].…”
