Effects of preshipping management on measures of stress and performance of beef steers during feedlot receiving1

Abstract: Over 2 yr, a total of 96 steers (approximately 7 mo of age) were allocated to 1 of 4 weaning management strategies: 1) control: weaned on the day of shipping; 2) creep-fed: allowed free-choice access to concentrate before weaning and shipping; 3) preweaned: weaned and provided supplemental concentrate on pasture before shipping; and 4) early-weaned: weaned at 70 to 90 d of age and kept on pasture. On the day of shipping, steers were loaded together onto a commercial livestock trailer and transported 1,600 km o… Show more

“…Although some studies have shown that this response is activated through the measurement of fibrinogen, ceruloplasmin and SAA (Arthington et al, 2003(Arthington et al, , 2008Blanco et al, 2009;Carroll et al, 2009), others have reported that concentrations of fibrinogen and haptoglobin are not affected by weaning (Hickey et al, 2003b).…”

“…The effect of long distance (1600 km over one day) shipping and pre-shipping management on acute phase protein concentrations in calves was investigated by Arthington et al (2008). Plasma Hp concentrations showed a nonsignificant rise after transport, while ceruloplasmin values showed a significant increase on the first day after transport.…”

“…Following abrupt weaning, beef calves exhibit distress behaviors (Haley et al, 2005;Price et al, 2003) with alterations in hormonal mediators of stress (Blanco et al, 2009) and immune function (Hickey et al, 2003;Arthington et al, 2008;Lynch et al, 2010a;) evident up to seven days post-weaning. Lynch et al (2010b;, showed that weaning together with movement of beef calves from a pasture environment to a housing environment elicited transient neutrophilia, impaired neutrophil phagocytic function, decreased peripheral lymphocyte count and altered immunophenotypes.…”
