Effects of Preoperative Anxiety on Gastric Fluid Acidity and Volume

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of preoperative anxiety on the gastric pH and volume. We studied 96 female patients aged 16-60 yr who underwent elective gynecological surgery. We classified the subjects into 2 groups, those presenting preoperative anxiety scores using visual analogue scale (VAS, 0-10) less than 5 (L-group, n=59), and those with 5 and more (H-group, n=37). Immediately after tracheal intubation, gastric contents were aspirated using a 14-F multiorifice nasogastric tube. The gast… Show more

“…If anxiety is not controlled or prolonged, it can lead to increased protein degradation, re duced wound healing, increased risk of infection, altered immune response, electrolyte imbalance and fluid changes, and changes in sleep pattern. These factors prolong hospital stay and delay the discharge of patients ( 6 , 7 ). Postoperative pain is a form of nociceptive pain relating peripheral mechano-receptor stimulation.…”

“…Different drugs used for this purpose, including, but not limited to, morphine and its derivatives ± midazolam, reduce gastrointestinal motility and impede gastric emptying [58]. Also anxiety and stress seems to have a similar effect on gastric motility [59]. Clopidogrel is mainly absorbed in the intestinal portion of the digestive tract which means that reduced gastric motility may moderate its absorption [60].…”

“…39 At the start of a meal, the stomach is prepared for receiving food in the cephalic phase, in which the stomach becomes activated by parasympathetic stimuli (anticipating, seeing, and smelling of food, tasting, and possibly the oral detection of fatty acids and other nutrients) perceived in the brain and transferred to the enteric nervous system of the stomach through the vagus nerve. This results in the release of acetylcholine in the vicinity of G cells and parietal cells.…”
