Duplex soils, consisting of a sandy surface soil (A‐horizon) and silty‐clay subsoil (B‐horizon), occur in a boundary area between oasis and desert in northwestern China and create a challenging habitat for restoration of plant growth. We conducted an experiment in a 10‐year‐old H. ammodendron plantation forest to determine the influence of physical properties of duplex soil on water infiltration and plant root growth. We used a trenching method to assess root biomass, and classified roots into two diameter classes: fine (<2 mm) and coarse (>2 mm). Following a 26.7 mm rain event, water infiltrated to the B‐ horizon; further deep percolation was hindered by low hydraulic conductivity, so that B horizon remained at high available soil moisture for an extended period of time. Root biomass increased rapidly in, or very close to the B horizon, especially for coarse roots. The subsoil formed a barrier to root penetration, but may also reflect the accumulation of water resources at the boundary between the A‐ and B‐horizon. Shoot growth and root distribution, shrub height and canopy area, and total root biomass were negatively correlation with depth to the B horizon, and that was reflected by quadratic functions. We conclude that the texture and structure of duplex soils influenced the soil environment for water infiltration and storage, indicating that the B‐horizon underlying sand in duplex soils is advantageous for the growth, and development of planted sand‐stabilizing vegetation. These results have important implications for sustainable development of sand‐fixing plantations in desert ecosystems.

Spatial and temporal trends of climate change in Xinjiang, China

Temperature and precipitation time series datasets from 1961 to 2005 at 65 meteorological stations were used to reveal the spatial and temporal trends of climate change in Xinjiang, China. Annual and seasonal mean air temperature and total precipitation were analyzed using Mann-Kendall (MK) test, inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation, and R/S methods. The results indicate that: (1) both temperature and precipitation increased in the past 45 years, but the increase in temperature is more obvious than that of precipitation;(2) for temperature increase, the higher the latitude and the higher the elevation the faster the increase, though the latitude has greater influence on the increase. Northern Xinjiang shows a faster warming than southern Xinjiang, especially in summer; (3) increase of precipitation occurs mainly in winter in northern Xinjiang and in summer in southern Xinjiang. Ili, which has the most precipitation in Xinjiang, shows a weak increase of precipitation; (4) although both temperature and precipitation increased in general, the increase is different inside Xinjiang; (5) Hurst index (H) analysis indicates that climate change will continue the current trends.

Means of groundwater recharge in a semi-arid area: example of the Trarza aquifer (southwest Mauritania) Abstract The Trarza aquifer extends over about 40 000 km 2 in southwestern Mauritania, between the Senegal River in the south, the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the Mauritanides metamorphic chain in the north and east. The Trarza aquifer lies in Continental Terminal and Quaternary sediments. The field investigations conducted between 2010 and 2012 significantly added to the few older measurements. The hydrodynamic and geochemical approaches showed that in this semi-arid area, the groundwater dynamics is influenced by many environmental changes, past and present (from Quaternary transgressions to the various dams regulating the Senegal River). Groundwater is mainly recharged by lateral infiltration of surface water of the Senegal River, and to a lesser extent, by rainfall infiltration. Groundwater mineralization is controlled by water-rock interactions with silicates and alumino-silicate minerals and is locally influenced by marine water resulting from past Quaternary transgressions. Evaporation strongly affects surface waters before and during their infiltration. Very preliminary calculations suggest an annual recharge of less than or equal to 5% of precipitation, i.e. about 5 to 10 mm.
