Effects of pre‐surgical nasoalveolar moulding on maxillary arch and nasal form in unilateral cleft lip and palate before lip surgery

Abstract: These findings indicate that PNAM for infants with UCLP enhanced symmetry in the maxillary alveolar arch and nasolabial form. In addition, the posterior movement of the anterior points of the maxillary alveolar arch was correlated with the improvement of columella deformation.

“…From the total of 70 patients, 350 maxillary models were included in this study and grouped in 5 different age categories. Forty-six models were excluded due to loss of follow-up (19), low-quality impressions (17), and segmentation errors, occurring when the algorithm could not accurately determine the alveolar crest (10). Mirroring and analysis succeeded for all the remaining 304 models.…”

“…The goal of NAM is to achieve a more symmetrical position of the maxillary segments and the nose by molding the maxillary segments and nasal cartilage and stretching the columella. The intraoral molding plates are modified or replaced weekly during treatment to bring the alveolar segments closer to the desired location [17][18][19]. Fuchigami et al [17] investigated the restoration of symmetry by using this technique in patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate (ULCP).…”
