Effects of pollution on holdfast macrofauna of the kelp Ecklonia radiata :discrimination at different taxonomic levels

Abstract: Non-metric multidimens~onal scallng (MDS) ordinations were conducted at 5 main taxonomic levels and 1 mixed level (corresponding to malor fauna1 groups) for community data from kelp holdfasts sampled across a gradient of domestic effluent at Coffs Harbour, New South Wales Australia All plots showed separation of close outfall sites from controls Two-way nested analys~s and pairwise compansons of locations using non-parametnc randomisation tests (ANOSIM) indicated that differences between the close outfall loca… Show more

“…Our study also benefited from a combination of multivanate and univariate analyses to examine changes in the structure of the encrusting assemblages. The effects of ocean ouffalls on biological assemblages have been described using multivanate (Clarke 1993. Smith & Simpson 1993 or univariate techniques (Otway et al 1996a); however, the use of a combination of these techniques is rare (but see Chapman et al 1995, Otway et al 1996b).…”

“…Factors such as water movement (Fenwick, 1976;Gibbons, 1988), depth (Krapp-Schickel, 1993;Jacobucci & Leite, 2002), accumulation of detritus (Moore, 1973), and pollution (Smith & Simpson, 1993) can have a direct effect on the distribution and abundance of the fauna associated with macrophytes. However, as these factors can modify the morphological characters (Paula, 1988) and growth and mortality rates of the macrophytes (Jernakoff et al, 1996), the effects on associated animals can occur in an indirect manner (Dommasnes, 1968).…”

“…grazers, predators, detritivores). Such assemblages have great potential for measuring changes to biodiversity (Gee & Warwick 1996) and assessing environmental impacts (Smith & Simpson 1993). A diverse component of the assemblage can be found in small patches of habitat under a variety of different environmental conditions, they can develop in natural and artificial habitats placed in different areas (Costello & Thrush 1991), and they can potentially be transplanted from site to site.…”
