“…34 Pluronic F-68 is also used in large scale mammalian cell culture and was found that at low concentrations, can enhance cell growth. 35 Pluronic F68 is used in the external solution formulation to serve as a surfactant to prevent coalescence of the double emulsions and to improve stability of the vesicles. Ethanol serves to extract the oleic acid from the middle layer.…”

“…The hypothesis under investigation was that PLF-68 increases matrix synthesis of OA-like cells besides cell viability. The survival effects of PLF-68 have been well documented for cells either mechanically traumatized (Phillips and Haut 2004;Rundell et al 2005;Baars et al 2006) or subjected to toxic and stress conditions (Hellung-Larsen et al 2000;Marks et al 2001). In the current study, it was observed that the cell viability of PLF-68 treatment groups was numerically higher than that of the negative control group in agreement with the previous findings (Hellung-Larsen et al 2000;Phillips and Haut 2004;Rundell et al 2005;Baars et al 2006).…”

“…Furthermore, Baars et al (2006) reported that PLF-68 reduced DNA fragmentation in cells of bovine chondral explants exposed to injurious unconfined compression. The protective effect of PLF-68 on cells against chemical and physical stress has also been documented (Hellung-Larsen et al 2000;Marks et al 2001). This surfactant forms a patch preventing the leakage of the intracellular components (Lee et al 1999;Hannig et al 2000;Padanilam et al 1994).…”

“…It has been observed that, besides being incorporated to the plasmatic membrane decreasing its fluidity (Palomares et al 2000), it can enter and accumulate within the cells (Gigout et al 2008). The wide range of cellular processes that this molecule can trigger makes its influence on the cellular metabolism dependent on the cell line and on the concentration used (Elibol 1999;Lee and Kim 2002;Hellung-Larsen et al 2000). It is possible that the rest of non ionic additives (PVA and PVP), not as widely studied as PF68, at high concentrations have an effect similar to that observed with PF68.…”
