Routine use of the antibiotic flavomycin in broiler production may lead to resistance, and alternative growth promoters are used to enhance performance. Two hundred day-old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were allocated to five dietary supplements included from d 1-42: flavomycin, three possible alternatives, a probiotic, prebiotic and a synbiotic, as well as a control treatment. There were four replicate cages of 10 birds each in each treatment. Compared with the control and antibiotics treatments, the probiotic, prebiotic and synbiotic treatments increased (p = 0.001) weight gain (64, 66, 73, 70 and 74 g/d, respectively). The synbiotic treatment reduced (p = 0.004) the feed conversion ratio, compared with the control and antibiotic treatments (1.70, 1.84, 1.83, respectively). Compared with the control and antibiotic treatments, the birds fed the synbiotic treatment had greater relative gizzard (+47%) and spleen weights (+115%), and lighter kidneys (-47%). The birds fed the symbiotic treatment also had thinner walls of the caudal gut segments. The prebiotic had the most beneficial effect on cecal microbiota, stimulating aerobic and lactic acid producing bacteria and reducing Escherichia coli bacteria. Enterococci were increased in the antibiotic treatment. We conclude that there were significant performance and health benefits of using prebiotics, probiotics and synbiotics for broilers, rather than antibiotics.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of physical form of diet and dietary inclusion of enzyme and probiotic on growth performance, mucin2 gene expression, morphology of small intestine and intestinal Lactobacillus population of broiler chicks fed with triticale-based diets. Six hundred forty 1-d-old broiler chicks were arranged in 8 treatments with 4 replicates (n=20 chicks). This study was done based on a randomized block completely design in a 2×2×2 factorial arrangement with two levels of feed form (pellet and mash), two levels of probiotic (0 and 0.03% diet) and two levels of enzyme (0 and 0.05% diet). Birds fed with pelleted diet had higher weight gain at starter and grower (P<0.001) and also lower feed conversion ratio at starter (P<0.001) and grower periods (P<0.01) than those fed the mash diet. Birds fed with pelleted diets containing enzyme and probiotic consumed the most feed intake at starter period. Mucin2 gene expression was significantly higher in birds fed the pelleted diets containing enzyme or/and probiotic and mash diets containing probiotic than those fed other diets (P<0.01). Intestinal morphology and intestinal Lactobacillus population were not influenced by experimental treatments (P>0.05) Thus, physical form of diet plays important role in improving performance and gene expression in birds fed with triticale-based diets. The aim of the present study was to investigate interactions between feed form and dietary inclusion of probiotics (live organisms) and enzymes on growth performance, cellular and humoral immunity, and relative weights of lymphoid organs of broiler chicks fed a triticale-based diet. A total of 640 broiler chicks were allocated to eight treatments when they were one day old, with four replicates (n = 20 chicks in each). The dietary treatments consisted of feed form (pellets or mash) and dietary supplementation with or without a Bacillus-based probiotic (0.03% diet) and enzyme (carbohydrase, 0.05% diet) in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was calculated based on feed intake (FI) and weight gain (WG). The WG of the broiler chicks fed the pelleted diets containing the enzyme and probiotic (alone or in combination) was greater than that of the birds fed the mash diets without these additives. Significant interaction effects of the enzyme and probiotic on FCR and FI were observed in the starter period. The heterophil : lymphocyte (H : L) ratio of the chicks fed the pelleted diet containing the enzyme and probiotic was lower than that of the birds fed the other diets. The cellular immunity of the birds fed this diet increased after 24 hours, as shown by the results of a challenge experiment with dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) or an injection of phytohemagglutinin (PHA). In conclusion, feed form and supplementation of a triticale-based diet with feed enzymes and probiotics can greatly improve the growth performance and immunity of broiler chicks.
